Lucy (In The Sky With Diamonds) Passes Away

“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” one of the most iconic of The Beatles’ songs, was actually written about Julian Lennon’s childhood friend, Lucy O’Donnell. If you thought the song was about its acronym ‘L.S.D.,’ you aren’t alone; the BBC actually banned the song for alleged drug references.

In 2007, Lucy Vodden (married name), told BBC Radio the story of how Julian came to paint the picture which inspired Beatle, John Lennon, to write the song “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

“I remember Julian and I both doing pictures on a double-sided easel, throwing paint at each other, much to the horror of the classroom attendant. Julian had painted a picture and on that particular day his father turned up with the chauffeur to pick him up from school.”

The story that goes that when John asked Julian about the painting, Julian explained that the portrait was of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

The song was originally released in 1967 on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the album that solidified The Beatles’ position as true artists among their peers and fans.

The former classmates had resumed their friendship in recent months when Julian Lennon learned that Lucy had become ill with lupus, a disease which attacks the immune system.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009, Lucy O’Donnell passed away at 46 following a long battle with Lupus.

09.09.09 : The Trailer Is Here!

That’s right people, the official launch day for The Beatles Rock Band is rapidly approach (although not quickly enough for those anticipating the franchise’s next revolutionary iteration).  The good news is, we finally have some eye candy to keep us satiated until the September drop date is here, and it’s a doozie.  Check out the phenomenal new trailer over at the official site now!

The Beatles’ Entire Original Recorded Catalogue Remastered

Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music are delighted to announce the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (9-9-09), the same date as the release of the widely anticipated “The Beatles: Rock Band” video game.  Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. On the same date, two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released.

The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release. (more…)
