VIRGIN MUSIC CANADA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS WITH CHARITY CONCERT AND SPECIAL VINYL RELEASE
25 years ago a Canadian Virgin was born....
It all began when Sir Richard Branson, Simon Draper and Ken Berry launched the Virgin label in 1973 with breakthrough release - Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, with Virgin Music Canada officially opening its offices ten years later in 1983. EMI eventually purchased Virgin in 1992 which went into effect in January of 1993. Since its inception, many incredible international and domestic artists have called the Virgin label home including: David Bowie, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Choclair, Culture Club, Enigma, Ben Harper, Iggy Pop, Janet Jackson, Colin James, Lenny Kravitz, Leahy, Rita MacNeil, Martha & the Muffins, Massive Attack, The Northern Pikes, ONE, Pluto, The Rolling Stones, Simple Minds, Smashing Pumpkins, Spice Girls, Tina Turner, UB40 and The Verve.
Virgin Music Canada is set to celebrate the 25th Anniversary with a special charity concert event happening on October 14 at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Some of the label's most beloved Canadian artists: The Northern Pikes, Colin James, Choclair and Pluto are confirmed to perform, making this a must-attend event for all music fans/industry. Eye Weekly is a sponsor of this event for which proceeds will be donated to MusiCan to raise funds to support a school’s music program. Tickets go on sale September 11 and are $20 each available via Ticketmaster or you can email Virgin25@emimusic.ca for more information. Limited edition Virgin Music Canada 25th Anniversary t-shirts will be on sale at the event.
“The Northern Pikes are absolutely thrilled to be involved in this event and are very much looking forward to seeing many old friends again. The band’s association with Virgin Music Canada changed the trajectories of our lives and we will be forever indebted to all of the hard work Virgin’s staff put into our career," says Bryan Potvin (The Northern Pikes).
To further commemorate this landmark Anniversary a limited edition vinyl collection entitled, Rare & Brilliant - Virgin Music Canada 25th Anniversary (tracklisting is below) will be available at participating retailers on October 14 and at the event.

"My Virgin years were extremely exciting and I was always so proud of the dedicated and musically diverse team that flew the Virgin banner. I remember when we had moved into Rundle House, how the sound of Enigma reverberated so well throughout the mansion. We were fortunate that EMI Music Canada allowed us to maintain our own identity, realizing what a special culture Virgin was and what made it tick," adds Doug Chappell (former President of Virgin Music Canada).
