SENSATIONAL SCOTTISH NEWCOMER KT TUNSTALL CONFIRMS PROMOTIONAL VISIT TO CANADA AUGUST 8 - 10, 2005
DEBUT ALBUM EYE TO THE TELESCOPE TO BE RELEASED IN CANADA ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2005 & ACKNOWLEDGED WITH PRESTIGIOUS MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE NOMINATION
It's been a year of opportunity and great timing for Scottish- based singer/ songwriter KT Tunstall. Early on, came the last minute offer to perform on UK music platform Later With Jools Holland, in which she pulled no punches and defiantly and confidently debuted her musical talent and album lead single Black Horse And The Cherry Tree on national TV. From there, KT began to seize her moment in the spotlight and with the current momentum surrounding her, has no need to relinquish the power.
Now, her gorgeous and poignant debut disc Eye To The Telescope has just been acknowledged with one of the most prestigious musical accolades available within the UK, a nomination for this year's Mercury Music Prize. This stands her shoulder to shoulder with artists such as Coldplay, Bloc Party, MIA & Kaiser Chiefs in contention for the award. The winner will be announced on September 6, 2005. Critical praise for Eye To The Telescope has been substantial from the moment it was released in the UK on January 10, 2005. ****(4 star) reviews from The Times, The Guardian, Q and The Sunday Times spoke volumes to the debut effort's caliber and craftsmanship.
"With a rasp reminiscent of Janis Joplin at her most raw and an ability to evoke a Carole King-style intimacy, Tunstall has a startling emotional range. She may be new to the ranks of stardom, but she's not going to stay that way for long." - The Guardian. February 2005.
In addition to her UK dominance, she is fast gaining an international presence as a Top 20 seller in France and with Top 20 airplay in countries like Ireland, Italy, Brazil and Chile. Eye To The Telescope has also been released in Australia, Singapore, Mexico and other territories. The album is just shy of the half-million mark in sales worldwide.
The 12 album tracks were recorded in a 'gnarly little studio in the woods' with production by Steve Osborne (U2, New Order, Happy Mondays). The lo-fi, visceral boot-wielding approach was inspired by KT's conversion to the hiss and crackle of early blues. KT has also shared performance stages this past year alongside Joss Stone and at Glastonbury with 'klezmer hip-hop' band Oi Va Voi.
EMI Music Canada, excitedly, will release Eye To The Telescope on September 20, 2005. KT will be in Canada over early August to cover promotional media, and perform an exclusive, invite only, solo show case at The Drake Underground (August 8) in Toronto. A confirmed appearance on Canada AM has been locked in for August 9. Montreal will host KT in market August 9-10. Canadian tour dates are expected to follow in the coming months.
