EMI MUSIC GATHERS 27 NOMINATIONS FOR THE BILLBOARD LATIN MUSIC AWARDS
Miami, FL (February 12, 2004) - EMI Music and its roster of distinguished artists are among the finalists of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will be held on April 29th at the Miami Arena in South Florida and air live on the Telemundo Network.
Mexican superstar Thalia and label mate Obie Bermúdez, the Puerto Rican singer/songwriter who has taken the Latin market by storm, received four nominations each. Three-time nominees include the renowned A.B. Quintanilla III y los Kumbia Kings and Intocable, the hottest Regional Mexican band of 2003. Italian pop star Tiziano Ferro rounds out the multiple nominees with two. And last but not least, Colombian singer/songwriter Soraya; the pioneer of Latin Hip-Hop Vico C; Monterey rockers El Gran Silencio, and Regional Mexican mainstay El Coyote y su Banda Tierra Santa each received a nomination.
Thalia, who is currently promoting her Greatest Hits collection that was released earlier this week (February 10th), is a finalist in the categories of Hot Latin Track of the Year, Vocal Duet ("Me Pones Sexy," featuring Fat Joe); Latin Pop Airplay Track of the Year, Female ("A Quien Le Importa"); and Latin Dance Single of the Year, in which she has two songs competing against each other: "Baby I'm In Love" (Boris & Beck Remix) and "I Want You" (Pablo Flores Remix).
Obie Bermúdez, who is in the middle of a concert tour throughout the United States promoting his EMI Music debut CONFESIONES, is a frontrunner in the following four categories: Hot Latin Track of the Year for his No. 1 single "Antes," which remained in the Top 10 for more than six months; Latin Pop Album of the Year, New Artist; Latin Pop Airplay Track of the Year, Male, again for "Antes;" and Tropical Airplay Track of the Year, Male, a third time for "Antes."
Tejano sensation A.B. Quintanilla III y los Kumbia Kings, a constant among the Latin award finalists, received a nomination for Latin Pop Album of the Year, Duo or Group, for the Latin Platinum selling album 4. As is the case with Thalia, A.B. Quintanilla III y los Kumbia Kings have two songs competing against each other for the award as Hot Latin Track of the Year, Vocal Duet: "No Tengo Dinero," featuring Juan Gabriel and fellow label act El Gran Silencio, and "Mi Gente," featuring Ozomatli.
Intocable, which solidified its status as one of the hottest Regional Mexican bands in the market, is among the favorites to win an award as Hot Latin Tracks Artist of the Year, Top Latin Albums Artist of the Year, and Latin Greatest Hits Album of the Year for LA HISTORIA – the Latin Platinum selling album that debuted No. 1 on SoundScan upon its release.
Tiziano Ferro, the Italian heartthrob who has taken Europe and the US by storm, is competing in the categories of Latin Pop Album of the Year, New Artist for this debut album Rojo Relativo, and Latin Pop Airplay Track of the Year, New Artist for his No. 1 hit single "Alucinado."
Soraya, who is currently touring the US with Enrique Iglesias, is nominated for Latin Pop Album of the Year, Female for her critically acclaimed self-titled CD; while the Philosopher of Rap" Vico C received a nomination for his Latin Gold selling album EN HONOR A LA VERDAD in Latin Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year; and El Coyote y su Banda Tierra Santa is in the run for an award in the category of Regional Mexican Airplay Track of the Year, Male Group for "Te Vas Amor."
EMI Music U.S. Latin (a.k.a. EMI Latin) was recognized as one of the top four record companies with nods in the following five categories: Hot Latin Tracks Label of the Year; Top Latin Albums Label of the Year; Regional Mexican Airplay Label of the Year; Latin Pop Albums Label of the Year; and Regional Mexican Albums Label of the Year.
As if were not enough, EMI April, ASCAP is in the run as Publisher of the Year; and EMI Music Publishing is among those recognized as the Publishing Corporation of the Year.
The finalists for the Billboard Latin Music Awards are based on sales and radio airplay data used by compiling the weekly Billboard charts dated February 15th, 2003 to February 7th, 2004.
